A New Autumn Tradition in Sapporo
On workdays, I often take a walk through Nakajima Park, located in the heart of Sapporo.
It was only a few years ago that the park’s autumn foliage began to be illuminated at night. Since then, the event has become a welcome addition to Sapporo’s fall season.
This year’s Nakajima Park Autumn Foliage Illumination has officially been announced and will run from October 23 to November 3.
The colorful autumn leaves are expected to create a beautiful atmosphere both during the day and after sunset.

Nakajima Park Today
Reports of autumn colors are already coming from nearby mountain areas such as Jozankei and the Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort.
In the city itself, some trees have also started changing color.
Over the last few years, I have noticed something interesting near the northern entrance of Nakajima Park, close to Nakajima-Koen Station.
The row of ginkgo trees at the southern end of Ekimae-dori Avenue turns a beautiful golden yellow every autumn.
(I doubt the illumination event started because someone noticed the same thing I did, but it’s a nice coincidence!)
When I walked through the area today, the leaves had already begun changing color.
Autumn Scenery in Nakajima Park
From late October to early November, visitors can enjoy colorful autumn foliage throughout the park.
Of course, the famous ginkgo trees are beautiful, but many other species also contribute to the spectacular autumn scenery.
Autumn Colors in 2025
The foliage was beautiful even during the daytime.
Illuminated Autumn Leaves
And when the illumination begins, the scenery transforms completely.
The colorful leaves reflected in the evening light create a magical atmosphere that feels quite different from the daytime view.
This year, I’m hoping to visit again after dark and enjoy the illuminated foliage in person.
A Growing Autumn Event for Sapporo
Sapporo is already known for many seasonal events throughout the year:
- February: Sapporo Snow Festival
- Late April to Early May: Sapporo Lilac Festival
- Early June: YOSAKOI Soran Festival
- Late July to Mid-August: Sapporo Odori Beer Garden
- Mid-September to Early October: Sapporo Autumn Fest
- Late November to Late December: Sapporo White Illumination
Even this short list shows how many popular events the city hosts.
I hope the Nakajima Park Autumn Foliage Illumination continues to grow and eventually becomes one of Sapporo’s signature seasonal attractions.
If you happen to be visiting Sapporo in late October or early November, this event is well worth adding to your itinerary.
